The massage grips affect the skin and the underlying tissue and are absorbed by the nerves. These transmit the sensations to the brain and cause the body to produce its own pain-relieving substances. By affecting the vegetative nervous system, the massage can also influence the respiration, digestive organs and circulation.

Recognized variants of the classical massage are manual connective tissue massage, lymph drainage, muscle reflex zone massage, periosteum massage and colonic massage. Vibration massage, ultrasound massage, electric massage, underwater massage and compressed air massage are performed with devices.
